2018 saw the first Yonex East of Scotland Junior tournament to take place following
the closure of Meadowbank Sport Centre. Given the size of the entry, two venues
were required to host the event, with the main location being the Jack Kane Centre
and St Augustine’s School being used for the Under 13 events on Saturday. We were
delighted to welcome competitors from as far afield as Orkney to Penrith. As is
always the case, spectators witnessed a very high standard of badminton in all four
age groups over the course of the weekend.
There were no triple winners this year but the following players all won two events;
Callan Short, Iona Muir and Eva Tremble (under 13 age group), Brooke Stalker
(under 15 age group), Lewis Hart (under 17 age group), Callum Smith (under 17 &
under 19 age group) and Rachel Cameron (under 19 age group). There were some
excellent performances from Lothian players throughout the tournament and title
winners included Eilidh McCallister, Alastair Campbell and Lauren Page as well as
Rachel Cameron.
We were delighted to welcome former internationalist and 8 time national singles
winner, Bruce Flockhart, to present the prizes on behalf of Yonex. Yonex, ably
supported by Gannon Sports, have now sponsored this event for 18 years for which
we are extremely grateful. We are also very grateful to the members of Lothian
Badminton Group and the Court Officials of BADMINTONscotland for their
assistance during the event, as well as to the players for the high standard of play, co-
operation and sportsmanship demonstrated during the course of the tournament.
The Moira Skene trophies, which are presented to the Lothian players who produced
the most meritorious performances during the course of the East Junior
Championships, were awarded this year to Alastair Campbell and Rachel Cameron.
