Four weeks on from the Yonex MCFM East of Scotland Under 15 and Under 19 Junior
Championships, it was the turn of the Under 13 and Under 17 age groups to demonstrate
their badminton prowess. This weekend’s tournament took place at the Jack Kane Centre.
Although slightly down on last year’s very large entry, we still had a very healthy entry in
both age groups.
We were delighted to welcome back Martin Campbell again to watch the finals and then
present the prizes. We really appreciate the ongoing support that we receive from Martin
Campbell Financial Management as well as the longstanding support from Yonex. The
importance of our sponsors cannot be over emphasised in ensuring the viability of these
tournaments. We are also extremely appreciative this year of the additional support which
has been provided by the City of Edinburgh Council. As always, there were many
entertaining and competitive matches throughout the weekend culminating in some excellent
semi finals and finals on the Sunday.
Lothian players were very prominent in the under 13 age group, with Emily Jobson being a
triple winner and Yingfan Wang reaching three finals and winning the boys’ doubles with
fellow Lothian player Oscar Feng and the mixed doubles with Emily. Akshara Chavan also
reached three finals in the under 13s, winning the girls’ doubles.
In the under 17 age group, Shona Brown and Yingfan’s older sister Ingrid Wang both won
two titles while Luke Parkinson reached three finals, finishing off the weekend with a victory
in the mixed doubles with Ingrid. Lothian’s Lingyun Xiao won the boys’ doubles with Max
McCabe. Anshita Jaiswal also reached three finals narrowly losing out in the girls’ doubles
by the smallest of margins.
We are greatly indebted to members of the Lothian Badminton Group for their hard work
throughout the weekend and we also appreciate the help throughout from the staff at the Jack
Kane Centre. We are also really grateful for the help from the Badminton Scotland Court
Officials group who provided umpires for the semi finals and finals. It also seems
appropriate to give a special mention to the Tournament Secretary, Ian Campbell. As a result
of a conflicting engagement, this was the first time in 43 years that Ian has not actually been
behind the desk at the East Junior. He was nonetheless, heavily involved in the preparation
for the event and I’m certain that he will be back once again at next season’s tournaments.
