This year’s Yonex MCFM East of Scotland Under 15 and Under 19 Junior Championships
were held at the Jack Kane Centre for the matches on Saturday and Meadowbank Sports
Centre on Sunday for semi finals and finals. It was wonderful to see such a large entry and to
be able to welcome players from England and Wales as well as from Scotland.
We were delighted to welcome back one of our sponsors, Martin Campbell, to watch the
finals and then present the prizes. We really appreciate the support that we continue to
receive from Martin Campbell Financial Management and Yonex and we are also extremely
appreciative this year of the additional support which has been provided by the City of
Edinburgh Council. As always, there were lots of entertaining and competitive matches
throughout the weekend concluding with some excellent semi finals and finals on the
Sunday.
Lothian players featured prominently throughout the weekend and in the finals. Emily
Jobson won the U15 girls’ singles while Deepti Vijayakumar won two titles in the under 19
age group, including the mixed doubles with fellow Lothian player, Blair Tait. There were
two double winners in each age group. In the under 15 age group, Calum Tsang (boys’
singles and boys’ doubles) and Nathan Luo (boys’ doubles and mixed doubles) both won two
events. In the under 19 age group, in addition to Deepti who won the girls’ doubles as well as
the mixed, Lewis Smith also won the boys’ singles and boys’ doubles.
We are extremely grateful to the members of the Lothian Badminton Group committee who
assisted throughout the weekend and to the staff at the Jack Kane and Meadowbank Sports
Centres for their support at the respective venues. We also really appreciated having the
Badminton Scotland Court Officials on Sunday at Meadowbank for the semi finals and
finals.
The next big event for us will be the Yonex MCFM East of Scotland U13 & U17 Junior
Championships which will take place at the Jack Kane Centre on 2nd and 3rd November.
