The entry at this year’s East of Scotland Championships was not only the largest for several years but also featured many of Scotland’s top junior and senior international players. The standard and competitiveness of play did not disappoint and there were many high quality matches from the start of the tournament right through to the finals.
It was a successful tournament for Lothian players with Julie MacPherson winning the women’s singles and mixed doubles event with Adam Hall (Mauchline), Matthew Carder winning the men’s singles and Martin and Michael Campbell winning the men’s doubles.
In a repeat of last year’s men’s singles final, Matthew Carder got the better of Ben Torrance in a closely contested match with Matthew running out the winner 21-12 19-21 21-19 in 53 minutes to take the title for the third year running.
Julie MacPherson warmed up for the European Junior championships later on this month by winning the women’s singles title without the loss of a set, defeating Caitlin Pringle 21-10 21-8 in the final.
Martin and Michael Campbell regained the title they won in 2013 again without dropping a set, beating Josh Neil and Ben Torrance 21-11 27-25 when they finally closed out the match on their tenth match point.
Rebekka Findlay and Caitlin Pringle won the ladies’ doubles, defeating Kirsten Geals and Victoria Wan in another closely contested match, 21-19, 21-19.
In the last final of the day, Adam Hall and Julie MacPherson ensured they head to Poland for the European Junior Championships with good confidence by defeating Patrick MacHugh and Rebekka Findlay 21-19 21-19 to take the mixed doubles title.
